ALTRINCHAM ACES 3
National Ice Hockey League – North
Laidler Conference – Division Two
Sunday 4th October 2015 – National Ice Centre
Back on familiar territory Sunday evening, New League leaders Nottingham Lions paired up with the Leagues new boys, the Altrincham Aces.
Under 20’s Hamish Hall and Joe Gretton were released to play the Leopards in Solihull, Tom Hovell was allowed to rest, Ben Wood still absent . Five under 18 players not only iced in Deeside on Saturday night, but also played a full game for the Cougars against Whitley in the early evening thenwent straight into the Lions line-up against the Aces.
Also returning to the squad were Jamie Hovell and Jessica Urquhart for her first appearance this season. Finally, Lions introduced their new back up net minder Samantha Bolwell, a GB Women’s International on a dual contract with the Sheffield Shadows.
The game started brightly with Lions first goal in six and a half minutes through top scorer Connor Glossop’s eighth goal of the season from a pass by Cameron Pywell. Lions then survived two Altrincham power plays with Kieron Raynor for Interference and then scorer Glossop serving time for Holding. Dan Hazeldine helped himself to Lions second goal shorthanded in the fifteenth minute, then forty-four seconds later Max Bennett opened his goal account with Nottingham’s third, assisted by Connor Glossop.
Altrincham began a revival with two goals late in the period. First, Jared Dickinson in the seventeenth minute assisted by Joe Greaves and Conor Howard, then Dickinson again with the help of Cade King forty-three seconds from the end of the session.
Joe Humphries went for Interference just under a minute from the start of the second period, followed by Aces King going into the box for holding the stick. Whilst a player from each side were in the box Glossop scored his second of the night playing 4 on 4 with aid from Adz Andrews and Alan Levers.
Lions lost the services of Joe Humphries on a ten minute misconduct penalty, but within five seconds, Bennett came up with his second goal from a pass from Glossop. Altrincham then called a time out. The period finished with a pair of Lions Power plays, Daniel Berry for holding and Greaves for abuse.
Michael Gilbert was on the mark six minutes into the final session, Dan Etherington and Brian Worrall with the assists. Jamie Hovell opened his account with an unstoppable schot from the blue line ably assisted by Glossop.
On the fifty-five minute mark, three players were given roughing penalties, Aces Greaves and Lions Humphries and Hazeldine. Nottingham called Time out twenty-three seconds from the end, but not the end of the penalties, Max Bennett given a misconduct penalty on the final hooter.
So the Nottingham Lions now sit three points clear on the top of the table, and will remain there for at least a fortnight due to the way the fixtures are planned. Of course it is early days, but the Lions have set their stall out and it is up to the rest of the teams to match the Lions commitment.
