Whitley Warriors 7 Nottingham Lions 0
The Lions returned to the Ice Rink at Whitley Bay for the second time this season looking to cause an upset similar to that inflicted on the Warriors’ North-East rivals Billingham two weekends ago.
Once again the Nottingham’s options were hampered by a string of injuries to key players – captain Chris Colegate, Christy Johnson-Brown and Johnny Bell were all absent whilst Marcus Maynard and Lee Kemp were also missing along with numerous youngsters on duty with the Under 18’s squad.
More similarities to the Billingham game two weeks ago came in the form of Netminder Alan Levers playing out of goal just as Sam Gospel did against the Stars. Levers was still unable to play in goal due to an injury that has kept him out for two months but was more than happy to fill in out of the net and boost the Lions ranks.
A tight first period saw Whitley dominate possession but with the visitors looking dangerous when the puck did come their way. DJ Good netting the only goal (05.21).
It was more of the same in the second – DJ Good getting his second (28.27) with the Warriors dominating possession once again
But any hopes of the Lions gaining a similar result to their 3-3 tie in Whitley back in October were quickly extinguished in the space of three minutes as the home side grabbed three quick goals from Callum Watson (35.48 & 36.43) and Dean Holland (36.05).
A seemingly impossible comeback never really materialised in the third as the Lions tried to limit the damage. A hard-working Warriors unit eventually found their way past Richard Griffiths twice more courtesy of Dean Holland with his second of the game (56.26) and Nathan Ryder (57.51).
Nottingham now have a crucial relegation battle with an improving Solihull Barrons side at the NIC next Sunday (7.15pm Face-Off) and they’ll be hoping for a little more luck and the return of some vital cogs in the Lions machine.
Interviews with Lions Head Coach Matt Bradbury, man of the match Ben Wood as well as Whitley Warriors Head Coach Garry Dowd and goalie Richie Lawson will be available to view on Lions TV in the next 48 hours.
